Honey Hills Garden Club Shares its Passion For Flowers

Hauppauge-based gardening club displayed 12 arrangements at its annual flower show this Saturday.

The Honey Hills Garden Club of Hauppauge held its annual flower show at the on Saturday. Members created 12 flower arrangements representing their favorite book titles, using a combination of flowers grown in their backyard and purchased blooms.

Evelyn McMahon, a 35-year member of the club , chose the book “Heaven is for Real” by Todd Burpo.

McMahon used lilies and a candle for her interpretative arrangement.

“It’s what I think heaven would look like,” she said.

“It shows people how you can do arrangements yourself and you don’t need to go to a florist” she said.

Marilyn Amodio, also a 35-year member of the club, made an arrangement based on the book “Care Packages” by Dana Reeve. The book is a collection of letters that were sent to Christopher Reeve after an accident left him paralyzed. Amodio’s son is a writer and he helped put the collection in the book together.

She used roses, snapdragons, sage, baby’s breath and astilbe in her arrangement and placed two wrapped packages next to the flowers.

Josephine Hauk, a 31-year member of the club, based her arrangement on the book “The Lady in the Tower,” by Alison Weir. She placed spider mums, button mums, evergreens and raspberry buds on a tower

Hauk is also the chairperson of the decoration committee that decorates rooms in the Bayard Cutting Arboretum and the Vanderbilt Museum for Christmas

“I love the flowers and the close friendships I have formed,” Hauk said. “We share experiences and we help one another when we need it."

Club president Kathleen Sullivan did an arrangement based on the book, “Alice in Wonderland,” by Lewis Carroll.

“I got the book in 1950,” she said. “It’s one of the first books I ever read. Recently I saw the movie starring Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp is my favorite all-time actor."

Sullivan found a found the teacup-shaped planter at Michaels craft store. She filled it with colorful carnations and greens all grown in her own backyard.

“The club is always looking for new members,” Sullivan said. “We’re looking for men or women to join. I know a lot of men out there are gardeners. We would love to have them join.”

Club activities include guest lecturers in the field of horticulture, flower arranging workshops, wreath workshops, films and videos of famous gardens and judged horticulture and flower arranging done by members.
