Man Charged With DWI After Fatally Striking Pedestrian

The crash occurred in Central Islip early Friday morning, police say.

A Central Islip man was drunk when he struck and killed another man with his truck early Friday morning in Central Islip, police said.

According to police, 37-year-old James Fitzpatrick was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado west on Suffolk Avenue near Church Street when his vehicle struck 63-year-old Robert Fornasier at 12:13 a.m.

Fornasier, of Central Islip, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fitzpatrick was arrested and charged with DWI. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
