Hauppauge Students Named One of Five New York State Finalists in First Round of National Solve for Tomorrow Science Research Contest
Hauppauge High School’s 10th, 11th and 12th grade science research students recently were selected as one of five New York State finalists in the first round of the national Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. The competition asks students to identify a need or problem in their respective communities and to explain how STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) can address or solve this need.
The Hauppauge students’ winning proposed project was to develop a smart phone app that would provide Long Islanders with specific evacuation routes, shelter locations, preparedness tips and type and quantity of supplies to have on hand through a supply calculator in the event of a hurricane. The class received a Samsung Galaxy Tab for being named a New York State finalist.
The students have submitted their Activity Plan for round two of the competition that outlines the activities that they will do in order to create their proposed Long Island-specific disaster response app. The Activity Plan will be judged on: originality, sustainability, community involvement/impact, need for technology and application of STEAM studies/procedures. It also will require the students to consider pre- and post-assessments to measure the tangible outcome of the project as well as to outline how the community will be involved. The students proposed partnering with the Long Island Chapter of the American Red Cross on this project.

Solve for Tomorrow is expected to announce the New York State Activity Plan winners shortly so that the students can begin the actual work on their proposed smart phone app for the third round of the competition.
