Suffolk's New Pilot Program Could Fix-Up Commerdinger Homestead

Suffolk County seeks private partners willing to restore historic Nesconset property for $1-a-year lifetime-lease.

Suffolk County is searching for a private party who might be interested in restoring the Commerdinger Homestead in Nesconset, in return for a discounted lease.  

Newsday reports Suffolk County Legislature approved a pilot program in December under seek a private partnerships to restore five county-owned historic sites, including the Commerdinger Homestead. In return for restoring the properties, the group or individual will be able to lease the property for next to nothing. 

Suffolk County Public Works Departments plans to start accepting bids soon. Those interested in the pilot program can expect strict guidelines on maintaining period authenticity of the property while maintain public access to surrounding county park grounds.

The Commerdinger Homestead in Nesconset, purchased by Suffolk County in 2006, dates back to the 1920s and has been home to several notable families including the Blydenburghs. 

The Walter S. Commerdinger Preservation Society claims the property has also been a home to the Smiths, the Hallocks, the McCormicks and most recently, the Commerdingers. It is located within the 90 acres known as Lily Pond Park.
