Proposed Plans for Smithtown Boulevard Available Online

Nesconset residents can log on and review proposed changed for Smithtown Boulevard, then share their comments with elected officials from the comfort of home.

Suffolk County Legis. John Kennedy Jr., R-Nesconset, has posted the in an interactive format on his District 12 website. The website allows Nesconset residents to see maps of the safety improvements being considered for the Gilbert Ave/Sheppard Lane and Mayfair Road intersections. 

The Smithtown Boulevard safety improvement study information and comment option now available on my website is part of my ongoing effort to directly involve more residents in the government decision-making that impacts the safety of their neighborhoods,” Kennedy said in a written statement. 

With a single click, residents can download the six-page executive summary of the traffic study conducted by Melville-based RBA Group on Smithtown Boulevard for three years, between January 2007 to December 2009. 

The plans, unveiled to the public at the Nesconset branch of the Smithtown Special Library District on Feb. 16, proposed three different plans for improving safety on Smithtown Boulevard. 

The first alternative is to install a raised, 4-foot wide median west of Gilbert Avenue and east of Gilbert Avenue to prohibit left turns out of the 7-Eleven. While a second alternative would create two-way left turn lanes on Smithtown Boulevard to enter Gilbert Avenue, and installing a 8-foot wide raised median west of Gilbert Avenue. 

The third option significantly less welecomed by residents was aimed at slowing down traffic and increasing safety on Smithtown Boulevard is to install a roundabout, or traffic circle, at the Terry Road intersection.

Residents can download a the conceptual design alternatives drawn out on colorful maps on the legislator's website as well.
