Teen Drove Drunk During Head-On Crash With Serious Injuries: PD

The 18-year-old was allegedly driving drunk when he drove the wrong way and hit a car head-on, seriously injuring the driver, police say.

HAUPPAUGE, NY - A Bay Shore teen was arrested for driving drunk after a head-on crash that seriously injured a man in Hauppauge on Tuesday night, according to Suffolk Police.

Johnny Mendez, 18, was driving a 2008 Subaru Impreza northbound on Lincoln Boulevard, just north of Route 454, when the car veered into the southbound lane and struck a 2001 Jeep Cherokee driven by 61-year-old Francis Squillace at 10:15 p.m, police said.

Squillace, of Hicksville, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.

Mendez and a 17-year-old male passenger in the Impreza were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with minor injuries.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

Mendez was charged with DWI.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip today.
