Brooklyn Bridge Park Pop-Up Pool To Reopen For What May Be The Last Time

Locals won one more season for a pop-up pool that was only supposed to stay open five summers. On June 29, the final season begins.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — The heat is raging and so is the fight to save Brooklyn Bridge Park’s pop-up pool.

The beloved Pier 2 pop-up pool — which first opened in 2011 with a five-year contract — is slated to open on June 29th for what may possibly be the last time.

The pool was supposed to be dismantled and replaced with permanent sprinklers after the 2016, but Brooklyn Heights parents banded together and demanded it be spared.

The outrage spurred the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation — the private entity responsible for managing and maintaining the park — to grant the neighborhood just one more season of contented splashing and swimming.

That final season begins two weeks from Thursday.

The locals, who have since organized into the group Love Our Pool, are still fighting to save their right to swim.

The group has petitioned local representatives to help save the pool and earned backing from State Senator Daniel Squadron, Councilman Stephen Levin and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

They’ve also launched an iPetition.com campaign that has garnered more than 700 signatures.

“We are a group of parents who highly value this pool and the experiences it provides for our community-- to cool off, provide active recreation, promote water safety and have fun,” organizers wrote.

“There are too few pools in Brooklyn and the loss of this pool in Brooklyn Bridge Park would be a significant loss to the community.”

The 1500-square-foot pop-up pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week from June 29 until the season ends on Sept. 10.
