Translate Students in Mr. Moshoyannis’ fourth grade class at Lee Avenue Elementary School learned all there is to know about bats through the program “Skype a Scientist.” The program connects scientists from across the globe with classrooms to give students the opportunity to get to know a scientist and learn about a specific topic. Mr. Moshoyannis’ class was matched with Animal Biologist Elène Haave Audet from the Mathot Lab, Biological Sciences, University of Alberta. Throughout the virtual discussion, Audet spoke to students about the differences between species of bats including size and what climates they live in, how scientists track bats and which ones are the most common in New York. Students gained knowledge that aligned with their curriculum and the requirements for the New York State Science Assessment, as they are currently examining the natural world in class. Students prepared questions using Google Docs ahead of the presentation. The most commonly asked ones were shared with Audet, so students could get their answers straight from the source during the live discussion.
