“Nassau County lost a heroic firefighter and an outstanding citizen," Nassau County executive Ed Mangano said in a statement. "Ray Pfeifer passed away after a long and inspirational battle fighting 9/11 cancer. Ray never let his illness stop him from fighting for his fellow first responders. Our thoughts and prayers, as well as our admiration for Ray, is with his family Caryn, Taylor and Terrance."

Pfeifer fought hard to get the James Zadroga Bill passed through Congress. Pfeifer led the march through Washington, D.C., to lobby politicians to extend health care for those suffering from a 9/11-related illness.

The bill allowed those who responded to the September 11, 2001 attacks to be provided with the necessary medical coverage and compensation.

A wake for Pfeifer will be held Thursday at East Meadow Fire Station 1, located at 197 East Meadow Ave. in East Meadow, from 1 to 9 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at Holy Family Church, located at 17 Fordham Ave. in Hicksville, at 11 a.m on Friday. A Firefighter Collation will be held following the service at East Meadow Fire Station 4, located at 4 Bobreed Lane.

Flags on all Nassau County government buildings be flown at half-staff from Tuesday, May 30 through sunset on June 5 in honor of Pfeifer.

FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said in a statement: "Ray Pfeifer was a true fighter who bravely battled fires as a New York City Firefighter and fought tirelessly for all first responders who - like him - suffered from World Trade Center related illness. The entire FDNY family deeply mourns his loss."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who worked to get the Zadroga Bill passed, said Pfeifer was a shining light.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called Pfeifer a "hero and an inspiration."

Sen. Chuck Schumer said it was a privilege to know Pfeifer and to work with him.
