📰 News we're reading

1. The HPC on 11 Warren Street (blogspot.com) — Hudson’s Historic Preservation Commission is wrestling with what to do about 11 Warren Street, a county-owned building many feel harms the look and business vitality of the city’s gateway block. Members are questioning whether Columbia County is really exempt from Hudson’s preservation rules and how the Monroe balancing test applies. The outcome could determine how much say Hudson has over future county projects downtown.

2. News of the Robert Jenkins House (blogspot.com) — Hudson’s landmark Robert Jenkins House on Warren Street has just completed nearly $1 million in restorations and is now beginning work on an accessible rear entrance and patio. Funded by a major federal grant and many local donors, the Hendrick Hudson Chapter DAR aims to keep this iconic 1811 home open, welcoming, and historically intact for tours, programs, and research.

3. Chicken Law Redux (blogspot.com) — Hudson’s rules for backyard chickens are back under review after complaints about crowing roosters and rats reached the Common Council’s Safety Committee. Officials clarified that roosters are already banned and coops must be built to deter rodents, but some language may be tightened. Any changes could matter if you keep, or hope to keep, hens within city limits.

4. Hudson man sentenced for firing gun in Albany (hudsonvalley360.com) — A man from Hudson has been sentenced in Albany County Court to nine and a half years in state prison, plus post-release supervision, after admitting to a serious gun charge. Police say he was seen firing at an occupied vehicle in Albany in 2024, though no injuries were reported. The case may interest Hudson residents because it involves one of their own.
