Here are the top four stories today in Huntington:

  1. Animal shelters on Long Island are overrun due to adopted pandemic pets being returned. Many people got a pet during the pandemic, with strict lockdowns that mandated residents stay home. Residents turned to animal adoption but now are giving those pets back. "It's too difficult to take care of them because they need to be walked and cared for so they just call us instead to take them," said Smithtown Animal Control Officer Denise Vibal. There is also a shortage of veterinarians on the island, which residents struggling to get appointments. Click the link to read the full story. (News 12 Hudson Valley)
  2. Two Syosset seniors honored for outstanding achievements in physical education. Angelo Rasano and Senior Eleni Kaouris received medals at NYSAHPERD’s annual Nassau Zone awards ceremony held at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Dec. 5. (Patch)
  3. East Northport affordable housing community could begin construction in 2023. The planned 146-unit affordable housing community Matinecock Court could finally see progress after decades of silence. 4. Cold Spring Harbor students recognized for their work on mosquito DNA sequencing by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi. The DNA information compiled by four students is of such high quality, Bontempi said, that it will be published in a database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a component of the National Institutes of Health. "To say that these young ladies are inspiring is an understatement," Bontempi said. "The fact that such an accomplishment was achieved before even graduating high school is mind-boggling. At this rate, these students are without question on track to even greater contributions to the field of science in the very near future." (Huntington Patch)
