Burglar Uses Garage Door Openers to Enter Hauppauge Homes

Remote garage door openers found inside unlocked vehicles were used to gain entry into the homes in April, police say.

A burglar was able to gain entry into two Hauppauge homes in April by using garage door openers found in unlocked vehicles, police say.

According to authorities, a man entered unlocked vehicles parked in the driveways of homes on Dale Court and Janet Court earlier this month. The man then used remote garage door openers found inside the vehicles to gain entry into the garage, police say. The burglar would then enter the homes through a second door.

Police said cash, keys and a credit card were stolen from the Janet Court home on April 22. Police are investigating if anything was stolen on April 28 on Dale Court.

Residents were sleeping upstairs when both burglaries occurred, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department would like to remind all residents to lock their vehicles and secure remote controls and keep them out of sight. Residents should also lock all secondary entrances into homes through the garage to deter entry.
