Historian Christopher Verga will join us to discuss his book, Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses. His talk will detail the struggle among development, conservation, and a community that opposed Robert Moses’s plan to create a four-lane highway that would level Fire Island. The desire to preserve the natural beauty of our unspoiled beaches for all Long Island residents would become the center of a public relations war against Robert Moses's unchecked political power. This war resulted in the creation of the Fire Island National Seashore and the end of Moses' career. Registration is required. Open to all.
