HUNTINGTON, NY — Three kittens from a litter of five are the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pets of the Week. The "D Kittens," Daisy, Dahlia And Daniel are between seven and eight weeks old and can be adopted by the end of June, said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.

Someone messaged the shelter in early May that there were five very young kittens who were hiding in a metal box in an industrial complex in Farmingdale, Larkin said.

"Some of the employees had seen the babies when the mom was moving them from one location to another and they were concerned that the mom would hide the babies where nobody could find them," Larkin said. "We were worried also, so one of our volunteers set out to assess the situation and arrange to trap them and the mom."

The volunteer captured all the kittens two days later, and she brought them to the shelter's veterinarian. Each kitten was checked out thoroughly and placed among two foster homes.

"We were not sure if they were even eating on their own yet (and they were just starting to) so we didn’t want to overburden the foster homes," Larkin said. "As it turns out, they are all OK and thriving in their homes."

Daisy is an all gray female. She loves to play with any type of ball, whether the others are interested or not. Sometimes she just entertains herself while the others are resting. She is also a
strong competitor for the New York state wrestling team, Larkin said. She also has a very gentle side that usually surfaces when she is snuggling on a lap at nap time, and she is always purring away when handled by her foster parents.

Dahlia is an all gray female, except for some white on her tummy. She plays well with others and her hidden talent is her excellence at playing soccer. She enjoys all of the toys that are available to her and always ready to either explore when she has a lot of energy or snuggle when she is sleepy. She is also another purr machine.

Daniel, the only male in this group, is all gray with white tips on all four paws. He is not as outgoing as his sisters but he is playful. He is very gentle with his sisters and his foster parents and is the biggest mush in the group. He also likes new adventures but he is content to have the others take the lead.

"All three kittens are all gray with a slight variation that you need to look for when first seeing them together," Larkin said. "They have all been totally vetted, tested negative for FELV and FIV and litter box trained."

They will be spayed or neutered and received all of their inoculations.

If you are interested in any of the "D Kittens," you can check out the rescue's Facebook page or call the shelter at 631-757-4517.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

"Wouldn’t you love to give one or maybe two of these cutie pies a new forever home …especially since their first home was in a metal container at a very busy and loud building?" Larkin said. "Don’t they deserve better than that? We think so!"
