Dix Hills FD Breaks Ground on New Fire & Emergency Facility & HQ

December 14, 2017, Dix Hills, NY – The Dix Hills Fire District (DHFD) recently broke ground on with initial construction of a major fire district improvement project, bringing a wealth of good news to residents of Dix Hills and surrounding communities. A press conference was held on the grounds of the District’s headquarters, located at 115 East Deer Park Road, Dix Hills, NY 11746, to commence its new construction activities. The new Dix Hills Fire District facility will be a permanent home for DHFD Company 2, and renovations to the DHFD’s headquarters building (circa 1958). Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed by Summer 2018.

The Dix Hills Fire District is one of the largest fire districts in New York State, covering nearly 25 square miles, and serves a population of over 27,000 people. The project, which included a no tax increase provision, received significant community support and was approved by voters on November 1, 2016.

“It has always been our mission to provide Dix Hills residents and the thousands of commuters who pass through our community each day with the best possible fire and emergency protection as well as service,” stated Fire Commissioner Larry Feld, Chairman of the Dix Hills Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners.

“We’re a very busy Department with a fast growing volume of over 2,300 calls per year,” Chairman Feld explained. “The construction of a new Morton-type building at 115 Deer Park Road in Dix Hills, combined with the modernization of our Headquarters means that the expansion of fire and emergency services to meet community needs will be more efficiently and effectively achieved. Firefighter and emergency personnel safety and security will be similarly maximized, and we will also be able to better meet required OSHA and ADA compliance.”

With the construction contract awarded in October 2017 and the building permit in late November 2017, the groundbreaking and construction are right on schedule. Morton building superstructure, exterior wall construction and metal roof construction are expected to begin in February 2018, weather compliant, and interior fit out is scheduled to begin in April 2018, which includes drywall, metal stud framing, and electrical. Site paving, final completion and C.O. approval are expected to be completed by mid-June 2018.

Chairman Feld noted, “I’m pleased with the progress to date, and I’m proud that we are being energy efficient by utilizing recycled materials and energy-saving alternatives like photovoltaics wherever possible in order to reduce our overall carbon footprint.”

The firm of Bartlett, Amoruso & Recce, Architects P.C. of Hauppauge, NY is providing architectural supervision with its President Rick Bartlett heading the project.

“Every one of our 175 volunteer members is excited over this groundbreaking event. It is certainly a positive boost for the Department and the community alike,” Chairman Feld advised. He added with a smile, “and we’re always looking for more men and women volunteers!”
