Mikey Brannigan officially became a Paralympics Track and Field World Champion in the 1,500 meters on Sunday at the Suhaim Bin Hamam stadium in Doha, Qatar.
The 18-year-old East Northport native defeated Iran’s Peyman Nasiri Bazanjani by just .03 to break the tape in 3 minutes and 56.50 seconds, setting a course record time.
“I feel really happy,” Brannigan said in a press release. “I tried to be calm and not get too hyper, instead be patient and just relax. I’m excited to see what’s next to come on my road to Rio.”

Brannigan is scheduled to toe the line again in the Men’s 5,000m T20 on Friday, Oct. 31.
