HUNTINGTON, NY — Fanny and Felix, a pair of young kittens who had "very difficult and frightening starts" to their lives, are the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pets of the Week.

"They are not from the same litter, so they are not actual siblings but since they are being fostered together they are very protective of one another," said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.

Fanny was heard blocks away when she found herself stuck inside a car engine in Levittown on June 8, according to Larkin. Some good Samaritans and the local police tried to extricate her but had no luck.

"Not wanting to waste any more time since they did not know how long she was trapped inside
the engine, they decided to make a call to John Debacker who made the drive from Medford to get her out of this very sticky situation," Larkin said. "Success story, even though she was terrified and was all hisses and growls but she finally relaxed enough for John to transport her to our
shelter and we took over from there."

Felix was either abandoned or tossed out of a car on the overpass of the Southern State Parkway near Belmont Lake State Park on June 11, Larkin said. To the right was the parkway and to the left was Belmont Avenue, which is high-traffic road.

"He raised the audience of animal lovers passing by who were terrified on his behalf," Larkin said. "Once again someone called John and he came to lure the kitten into a carrier. Another spicy kitten rescued and he was brought to our shelter three days after receiving Fanny."

Felix was placed in the same foster home as Fanny since she was a single kitten.

"It was NOT 'love at first sight' with these 2 kittens," Larkin said. "It was all hisses, spitting, growling and swatting! How is it possible that 2 kittens that were only 4-5 weeks old were so ornery? Thank goodness with lots of attention and love in their foster home they finally settled down and accepted one another and have become best buddies."

Fanny is an all black kitten with a small patch of white on her chest. She loves to snuggle with people and is comfortable with the two dogs in the foster home, according to Larkin.

Felix is a black and white kitten who is still a bit spicy, but is comfortable with Fanny. He is warming up to people but needs some encouragement, Larkin said.

They both love to play and wrestle and have gigantic appetites and love their kitten treats.

Both kittens have been fully checked by the shelter's veterinarian, tested negative for FELV and FIV, litter box trained and have their first set of shots. They are scheduled to have their second set of vaccinations on July 26 and then their final vaccinations on Aug. 16. Fanny will be spayed and
Felix neutered. They will be available for adoption at that time, Larkin said.

If you are interested in meeting Fanny or Felix, you may call the shelter at 631-757-4517, email cats@laphuntington.org, visit the Facebook page or visit at the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

"Although we are not requiring you to adopt both kittens, they would do much better going home together or if there were another younger cat in the household," Larkin said. "Please give these babies a chance at a loving forever home since they obviously did not have one to start off with. Show them there are kind loving people in this world."
