Fire, Water Votes Set for Tuesday
Huntington department seeks approval of $4.5-million bond issue.
Voters around Huntington will elect commissioners to fire and water boards Tuesday, with a $4.5-million bond issue topping the ballot for the Huntington Fire Department.
The department wants to renovate its 1958 building, fixing wear-and-tear problems, finding more space in the building and creating training areas in a utility building across from its main building.
In addition, said Ed Erickson, a fire commissioner who is running for re-election unopposed, the department needs to upgrade its communications system and move a generator from the basement. "We have a shallow water table," he said, and the generator has to be moved to higher ground should the waters rise in a storm. He said that if the bond passes, the department would have to seek bids and sell bonds, meaning the renovations probalby wouldn't start until mid-2013.

The utility building work has two purposes, he said. "One is to place equipment we have to keep outside now and use it as a training facilty. Volunteer departments are getting more requests for training on their own. We have to do it close at home," he said.

Halesite Fire Department: Wayne Jeno running to replace Robert Waring, who is stepping down. Voting from 6-9 p.m.
Huntington Manor Fire Department: Incumbent Dane R. Martin running. Voting from 3-9 p.m., department HQ, 1650 New York Ave., Huntington Station.
South Huntington Water District: Incumbent Dominick Feeney. Voting from 3-9 p.m. at 75 Fifth Ave. South, Huntington Station, and at the King of Kings Evangelical Lutheran Church, (Ante-Room), 2601 New York Ave., Melville.
Greenlawn Water District: James M. Logan, chairman of the board of commissioners. Voting is 3-9 p.m. at 45 Railroad St., Greenlawn.
Greenlawn Fire Department: Incumbent Larry Ancewicz. Voting runs from 6-9 p.m. at the Greenlawn Fire Department 23 Boulevard Ave., Greenlawn.
