HUNTINGTON, NY — Holly, a 14-month-old female kitten, is the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pet of the Week.

"One of the most beautiful cats we have had in a long time has joined our shelter and she was very lucky…she was in the right place at the right time when she was rescued by a feeder/trapper on the East End of Long Island," said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter. "Holly appeared at a feeding station as a very young kitten. Nobody seems to know whether she was dumped or just found her way from another area or born to a feral mom at that feeding station."

Holly soon became pregnant at 6 months and gave birth shortly after, according to Larkin.

"Unfortunately she was not captured right away…she was trap savvy which is so sad for such a youngster. It took the trappers a few months to catch her," Larkin said.

When she and her babies were finally trapped, the rescuer did not want to put her back outside again because she was still a kitten herself, Larkin said.

"She was difficult to work with because she was hands off unless she was eating. Over time she grew to be very loving and socialized well."

The rescuer kept working with her while also trying to take care of her young babies, according to Larkin. Both of her babies had URI and conjunctivitis, and one of them nearly died, but with constant TLC, they made it to the point where the rescue took both of them into the shelter last August.

"Wendy and Octavia both looked like their mom, the only difference was Wendy was black and white and Octavia was gray and white.

"The best news is that they only lasted about a week in the shelter and were adopted together because they had such outgoing personalities," Larkin said.

Holly is a beautiful black and white girl with huge green eyes who loves to be loved.

"She has such a sweet personality, although a bit timid at first until she gets to know you," Larkin said. "She probably thinks you are going to try to trap her again. She has only been with us about a week and is still exploring the free roaming room she is in and getting to know the other cats. Because she was born and raised with other cats she appears to have no issues with them. And she has a voracious appetite!"

Holly has been fully vetted, spayed, tested negative for FELV and FIV and litter box trained. She is approximately 14 months old but still has the baby face of a kitten.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

The shelter is also open from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday nights only for those who cannot make it during the daytime hours.

"You can also stop in to see her when we have our One Year Anniversary/Open House and Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec 10," Larkin said. "Holly’s babies had a chance at finding their furever home , so let’s give Holly the same opportunity…she deserves a cozy bed, lots of food and treats and a loving home. Let’s make that happen for her for the holidays!"
