What is Housing Help?

Housing Help Inc. is a non-for-profit housing counseling agency that has been serving the community for over 30 years. Our mission is to help low and moderate income families access safe, decent affordable housing; to help them develop financial skills in order to retain their housing; to increase the supply of low and moderate income housing and to pursue fair housing goals.

We have developed six programs to help us achieve our goals:

First Time Home Buyer Counseling

Our HUD certified counselor provides free counseling and education to potential first time homebuyers. The counselor provides one-on-one financial counseling including budgeting and credit counseling, mortgage affordability, an overall view of the mortgage application process, mortgage instruments available, and down payment assistance programs. An additional four hours of classroom education is provided. Our counselors are trained and certified by NeighborWorks.

Foreclosure Prevention Counseling

Our HUD certified counselors provide free foreclosure prevention counseling. The counselors complete a full assessment of the situation, including financial situation, budgeting and credit counseling. The counselor intervenes with banks and mortgage companies to negotiate a workout and avoid the loss of the home.

Tenant and Landlord Assistance

Housing Help provides free information to tenants and landlords regarding their rights and responsibilities, and counsels those involved in landlord - tenant disputes. We assist tenants in finding affordable apartments. We provide information on the eviction process, and refer clients for free legal assistance if necessary.

Financial Capability

Housing Help Inc. provides Budget Counseling, Debt Management Workshops, and Credit Restoration services. Our counselors are NeighborWorks Certified Credit Counselors and have been providing these services for over 10 years. We provide assistance with budgeting and evaluating debt. We prepare an action plan to reduce debt and improve the credit score.

Student Loan Debt Counseling.

Our newest program provides assistance to people suffering under the burden of student loans. There are many different payment plans available to borrowers. Some loans are structured so that they can be forgiven after ten years if the borrower works for a municipality or a not for profit agency. Our trained counselors do a complete financial analysis to determine which program best suits the needs of the borrower.

Seminars and Workshops

Housing Help Inc. provides seminars on First Time Home Buying, Foreclosure Prevention, and Financial Capability. We are available to make presentations to churches, clubs, and other service agencies.

Matinecock Court

Matinecock Court is an affordable housing development to be built on the corner of Elwood and Pulaski Roads in Greenlawn. The NYS Division of Housing, Federal Tax Credits, the Town of Huntington, and private financing will fund this program. Housing Help Inc. is partnering with a private developer to complete the development and construction process.

Matinecock Court will provide 146 affordable homes for working people.
