HUNTINGTON, NY — Carter, the newest addition to Grateful Paw Cat Shelter, is the Huntington Pet of the Week.

Carter was born into a colony of 28 cats and kittens approximately 1 year ago, according to Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter. He spent most of that time hiding from humans and struggling to stay alive. He was finally trapped by a young girl who took over the feeding and TNR of the colony. He was caught with another male cat, much older, and neither one of them were returned to the colony. There were no other kittens that looked like him, so it was assumed that either he was an only baby or that his siblings never made it, Larkin said.

"The young girl who trapped him saw something in his eyes that made her think that he could be
rehabilitated, and so she brought him into her home to begin to show home what life could be
like if he was indoor cat and not living on the streets," Larkin said. "He responded very well and that is when we received the call to rescue him, so she could try to catch another kitten/cat who clearly didn’t belong living outside."

Carter is a handsome, very shy young cat, with beautiful white and black markings and yellow
piercing eyes, Larkin said.

"He wants to be your friend and be loved, but he sometimes holds back until he gets to know you. He will play with you and loves to be around the other cats in the room, probably because he was with so many others in his colony. He can either be found checking out the action in the room or outside with people walking, while curling up in one of the cuddle beds, or he will be snuggling with another fur-baby (usually Henry)."

Carter is fully vetted, tested negative for FELV and FIV, litter box trained and neutered. He would most likely do well with another quiet cat in the house to make him feel more comfortable, according to Larkin.
