Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week: Luna
Luna, a 3-year-old female tabby, is pregnant with a litter, but she will be up for adoption soon after.

HUNTINGTON, NY — Luna, a 3-year-old female tabby, is the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pet of the Week.
She is pregnant with a litter of kittens, but the shelter plans to put her up for adoption soon after she gives birth, said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.
"Luna arrived in a good Samaritans backyard March 27 to make herself at home," Larkin said. "She remained outside until March 30 when the good Samaritan brought her inside…they were checking the area around their neighborhood to make sure she didn’t belong to anyone …she was so friendly and looked so young."

The woman could not keep Luna, so she reached out to the shelter. She brought Luna to the shelter so she could be checked by a veterinarian.
Luna was tested for FELV and FIV and placed in a foster home until she has her babies.

"Then we will slowly wean the babies from her, have her spayed and then brought into the shelter for adoption," Larkin said. "The babies will stay in foster care until they are 3 months old."
Luna's foster parents said the cat made friends very quickly, according to Larkin.
"She has the sweetest disposition and the loudest purr. She skipped the lovely new cat bed that was purchased for her in favor of a perch on top of the dresser … but we know that will change when she is ready to deliver, which we hope is very soon! Her appetite is voracious but that is not surprising since she is eating for more than one."
She was introduced to the resident cat, Leon, in the foster home and no problems so far, Larkin said. Leon is giving Luna a wide berth, however, according to Larkin.
"No claws, teeth or hissing have erupted! She is quite happy to roam the house and hang out with the foster parents…when not checking out all of the closets!"
Luna is a tabby with white markings and beautiful green eyes. She was negative when tested for FELV and FIV. She is litter box trained and will receive her shots and be spayed about six weeks from now.
"We have to wait for the babies to be born and then for them to be weaned," Larkin said. "Then she will be available at the Grateful Paw for adoption. We were hoping she would have her babies before our next fundraiser on May 13 which is going to be a Mother’s Day / Kitten Shower at the
shelter in honor of all the mothers and kittens that will be coming our way very soon."
If you are interested in Luna, you can keep an eye on the rescue's Facebook page for updates on her status or call the shelter at 631-757-4517. The shelter will post when Luna gives birth. If the babies have the same personality as Luna, then they will be in demand and they will be at the Grateful Paw when they are old enough.
The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
