Huntington Hospital Discovers 1960s Time Capsule
ICYMI: This mark of history was found as the hospital celebrates its 100-year anniversary.
Workers recently discovered a time capsule from the 1960s while building a new emergency department at Huntington Hospital.
The capsule contained several documents from the early 1960s, including:
- A hospital news release from 1960
- A 1961 financial statement
- A 1962 hospital department chief list
This mark of history was coincidentally found as the hospital celebrates its 100-year anniversary in 2016.

“Finding this time capsule during the construction of our future emergency department was a great feeling, especially as we are celebrating our centennial,” Randy Howard, vice president of operations at Huntington Hospital, said in a press release.
To make their own mark on history, Huntington Hospital’s leadership placed mementos from 2016 into the capsule vessel for future generations to discover.

The capsule was then placed in one of the main beams of the soon-to-be-completed new emergency department.
Huntington Hospital’s first day of service to the community is believed have occurred on May 1, 1916. The hospital will be celebrating its anniversary this year with several events, including its golf outing and gala.
The hospital’s new emergency department is scheduled to open Jan. 2017.
