HUNTINGTON, NY — The valedictorian and salutatorian of Huntington High School were named.

Laurel Bonn is the 2023 valedictorian, while Haileigh Smith is the salutatorian. They will each speak at Huntington’s 162nd commencement at 6 p.m. June 23 in Blue Devil Stadium. A crowd of more than 2,000 is expected to attend.

"Laurel and Haileigh are extraordinary young people whose academic and extracurricular accomplishments are exceeded only by their character and leadership within our school district community," Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said. "Their work ethic and commitment to every endeavor continue to set an outstanding example and will surely serve them well as they take the next steps in their educational, professional and personal lives. Congratulations to them and to their families."

Huntington’s top two seniors captured the affection and respect of their classmates and teachers and excelled in every way possible, according to the school district. Their transcripts are filled with the most challenging Advanced Placement courses that Huntington offers.

"Laurel and Haileigh are truly outstanding young women and exceptional students," Huntington High School Principal Brenden Cusack said. "It has been such a pleasure to see them progress in their studies over the years and share their talents with us at Huntington High School. I am so proud of them and it’s wonderful to see that their hard work has paid off. I am sure they will both be going on to great things in the years to come and that they will continue to shine."

The seniors became emotional when they were summoned to the main office and informed of the good news by Cusack.

"I am very humbled and proud of myself for earning such a high honor," Bonn said. "All my hard work since freshman year has paid off. I couldn’t have done it without the support and guidance from my teachers, friends and family."

Both seniors excelled in their classes, clubs and athletics. At one time or another each of them has played on three different Blue Devil varsity sports teams.

"I’m very excited to receive this honor and to see where the work that I’ve put in over the last few years has landed me," Smith said. "But honestly, I never would have gotten this far if it weren’t for the teachers and peers who’ve helped me all along."
