In July 2013, Drug Enforcement Administration agents had searched outside Bonilla’s apartment and found a trash bag and plastic baggies containing a white powder confirmed to be cocaine and other suspicious items. Authorities then stopped Bonilla a few days later and said they found about 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of cocaine on him.

After the arrest, agents searched his second-floor apartment and found the $3 million in cash, along with the cocaine and cocaine base in various places.
