It's Time for the Town to Speak Up on Homicides

A young woman is murdered and left on the street. Does no one care?

Where is Town Supervisor Frank Petrone? Or the fix-it man,  Councilman Gene Cook? Or anyone in town government or any of the political parties? A young woman has been stabbed to death, her body dumped on the street, and yet the town of Huntington is dead silent. Does a murder in the Town of Huntington mean nothing to our leaders?

Apparently town leaders think it is enough to say policing is a police matter and they should simply go about their business as if nothing happened.

This was not a killing of a stranger, someone passing through town, though of course we should be concerned about the safety of all. No, this happened to one of ours, a Walt Whitman High School student who deserved a better life than what she got here in Huntington.

The Station is not just a problem child for the rest of Huntington; it is very much a part of the town, and what happens there should concern everyone.

For years, people have been lobbying to have the police substation returned to New York Avenue. That would be a good starting point. But we have a right to expect more, much more, from our leaders. We appreciate the fact that many town leaders show up for parades, ribbon cuttings, fire department events and so on. But ugly events cry out for a response, for leadership, and at a minimum, for some evidence of concern. Apparently a murder means nothing.

This is awful--someone’s dead child left on the street. We’re not asking the town to solve this killing or any other. We’re asking you to care enough to speak up.
