Last Chance: Tide Mill Tour
Huntington Historical Society offers tour of Huntington landmark Monday.

We've seen hundreds of events come and go in the community, but how often does one pass you by that you wish you hadn't missed out on? That's where we come in. Each week Huntington Patch will post a quick reminder about the events, activities or important tasks whose deadlines have come.
The will conduct Monday at 3:30 p.m. a guided tour of the Van Wyck-Lefferts Tide Mill, a property of The Nature Conservancy.
Built in 1795 in Lloyd Harbor, the mill once harnessed water power from the tides using the most advanced technology of the time. High tide filled the mill pond through the tide gate, and then, at low tide the trapped water was let out to turn the water wheel. The structure is unique in that of the scores of tide mills on Long Island's north shore, it is the only one left with its building intact, on its original dam and with many of its original massive wooden gears remaining, according to the Historical Society.

Admission to the two-hour tour is $15 ($10 for Historical Society members). Since access to the mill is by boat, some climbing up and down steps, into and out of the boat, is required, according to the Historical Society.
