Dear Editor:
With Halloween only a few weeks away, many families have reached out to me looking for safe alternatives to trick-or-treating amid the concerns of COVID-19. In an effort to get our community in the spooky spirit of the season, I am launching a Lawn and House Halloween Decorating Contest for all 18th Legislative District residents. Whether folks wish to enter into the decorating contest or are looking for a fun and safe activity to experience with their family and friends on the day of Halloween by viewing the creative entries, the contest provides a needed alternative.

The key to successfully navigating the ongoing risk of COVID-19 has been to adapt to the circumstances. No one wants Halloween to be cancelled, but many want to protect the health and safety of their loved ones. The contest simultaneously captures the great spirit of Halloween with an adventurous and creative option while avoiding the risks that may come with traditional activities. So, I say… get your Halloween on!
For details on how to enter, please email me at William.spencer@suffolkcountyny.gov with the subject line "Halloween contest." Judging will take place between October 24th and October 27th and the map of locations to visit will be released in time for Halloween. Looking forward to seeing all the frightening and unique decorations!
All the best,
~Legislator William Spencer
