Lloyd Harbor Approves Real Estate Sign Restrictions

New measure outlines signage for real estate open houses in the village.

A unanimous Board of Trustees approved new measures dictating restrictions on signage for real estate open houses in Lloyd Harbor. The trustees also discussed potential height and setback limits on flagpoles in the village.

Originally brought up at October's meeting and formally introduced last month, the new measures limit the number of signs that Realtors can put up in the village, promoting open houses. The signs will be required to be attached to the ground temporarily, cannot be more than 30 inches above ground and cannot exceed a size of 24 inches by 12 inches.

Signs can only be displayed during the hours when the open house is taking place and must be taken down immediately after.

With no members of the public at the meeting to comment on the matter, the local law went to vote, with all the trustees approving it. Village Attorney John Ritter says the law will go into effect once it's approved by the New York State Department of State.

Two Realtors who attended the meeting thanked the trustees for their work and patience.

Also at the meeting, a resident proposed the village look at its laws on flagpoles, particularly height limits and how far back the flagpole can be from the street. Current regulations say flagpoles can only be 24 feet at the highest and at least 100 feet back from the street. The resident proposed the board increase the maximum height to 50 feet, as he considered 24 to be "not overly respective of the flag."

Trustee Steven Herling suggested the topic be brought up to the village's Board of Zoning Authority, saying the question would be whether flagpoles should be considered as part of the village's structure laws. The board made a note to discuss the topic at their meeting next month.
