Suffolk House Blaze Battled By 50 Firefighters

The fire appeared to start in the garage of a Lloyd Neck home on Monday evening. Detectives believe it may have been caused by lightning.

LLOYD NECK, NY — A Lloyd Neck home caught fire on Monday evening, prompting the Huntington Fire Department to lead a 50-firefighter response to douse the flames.

Firefighters arrived at a heavily smoking house on Gerry Lane at 6:15 p.m. Monday, said public information officer Steve Silverman.

No one was home at the time of the fire, Suffolk police said. Detectives believe the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike.

There were no injuries reported, Silverman said.

Firefighters from Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Manor, Greenlawn, Centerport, Halesite and Melville fire departments were called to aggressively attack the fire, which appears to have started in the garage and storage area on the lower level before extending to the second floor. The firefighters were challenged by limited access to the area and hot weather.

The firefighters, who were joined by 10 trucks, had the fire under control within an hour.

Assistant Chief Sean Schwier and Deputy Chiefs Paul Smith and Matt Getter led the operation. The Huntington Community First Aid Squad provided EMS support, and Suffolk Fire-Rescue Coordinators also provided help.
