LUPINACCI URGES DMV TO HALT BAD POLICY, CONSTITUENTS TO SIGN PETITION

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,I-South Huntington) on recent reports that the DMV is selling personal information.

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,I-South Huntington) recently denounced the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) after various reports claimed the agency has been selling New York State motorists’ personal information without permission.

“I have to question the integrity of the DMV after hearing these disturbing reports,” said Lupinacci. “For a government agency to go behind the backs of motorists and sell personal information is appalling and dangerous. Our governor and the DMV need to explain why the public was not aware of this policy and who is buying our information.”

After hearing reports of the DMV receiving $60 million for selling personal information, Lupinacci promptly became a multi-sponsor on Assembly Bill 2509, which would require the DMV to alert motorists if their personal information is being purchased by private companies and organizations. The legislation has bipartisan support and is currently being held in the Committee on Transportation.

“During the past few days, I’ve heard from dozens of residents who are concerned about the various types of identity theft that could result from our personal information being passed to unknown organizations. Our first step to combat this needs to be bringing Assembly Bill 2509 to the floor for a vote,” concluded Lupinacci.

Editor’s note: Assemblyman Lupinacci encourages everyone to sign a petition that would require the DMV to inform the public as to who they sold personal information to. The petition is accessible at http://bit.ly/1HuIK8P.
