Melville Firefighters Rescue 10 Ducklings Trapped In Drain

Melville firefighters rescued 10 ducklings trapped in a storm drain and safely reunited them with their mother, the department said.

MELVILLE, NY — Members of the Melville Volunteer Fire Department rescued 10 ducklings from a storm drain and reunited them with their mother during an animal rescue call on May 2, according to the department.

The rescue happened during the morning hours after firefighters were alerted to ducklings trapped inside a drain in Melville.

Second assistant chief Andrew Taveras and the department crew responded to the scene and worked to safely remove the ducklings from the drain, the department said in a social media post.

Firefighters opened the storm drain and carefully reached inside as the ducklings huddled together in shallow water below. Nearby, the mother duck remained close to the scene while crews carried out the rescue.

After all 10 ducklings were removed, firefighters relocated the birds and reunited them with their mother.
