Gold Tree In Huntington Honors Children Fighting, Lost To Cancer (patch.com) — Families affected by childhood cancer gathered at Huntington Town Hall as the Gold Tree was lit for September, honoring children who are fighting, surviving, or lost to the disease. Started by the Daniela Conte Foundation, the tradition now anchors local awareness efforts and financial support for families, while the illuminated tree will remain on display in Huntington through the end of the month.
   

2. Matinecock Court ribbon-cutting highlights long struggle for affordable housing (libn.com) — A long-delayed 146-unit affordable housing community, Matinecock Court in East Northport, has finally opened with strong backing from the Town of Huntington and state agencies. After decades of fair-housing litigation led by local advocates, the limited-equity co-op now offers income-restricted homes, including units for people with developmental disabilities and veterans, giving Huntington-area residents new options in a tight housing market.
   

3. Northport Police Blotter Aug. 24-30 (huntingtonnow.com) — Recent Northport police calls detail everything from vehicle fires and water-main breaks to welfare checks, medical emergencies and two arrests tied to a CVS theft and a revoked license. Several aided residents were taken to Huntington Hospital, and Huntington Harbormasters were called after a boat sank, underscoring how closely village incidents connect with services and safety resources Huntington residents rely on.
   

4. How Long Island teachers are educating younger generations about 9/11 attacks (newsday.com) — A Walt Whitman High School teacher in Huntington Station is among several Long Island educators finding new ways to teach students about 9/11, a tragedy they didn't live through. Using her father's Port Authority police experience and preserved artifacts, she helps local teens connect personally with the history, while other districts create memorials, oral histories, and museum trips to keep the lessons alive.
   

5. TPS will end for Salvadorans on Long Island, nationwide on Wednesday (newsday.com) — Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorans is set to end Wednesday, leaving many Long Island residents, including those in Huntington and Huntington Station, fearful about work, family separation and deportation. Local advocates, attorneys and officials describe how losing legal status could shutter businesses, disrupt school transportation and construction projects, and upend the lives of longtime neighbors who have contributed to the community for decades.
