Mystic Pizza's Rave Review + Syosset Doctor's NYS Recognition

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Huntington.

(Patch Media)

Hey, everybody. It's me, Andrew Tessler, your host of the Huntington Daily — here to impart everything that's fit to print about what's happening locally. Including updates on...

  • Broadway World's rave review for "Mystic Pizza."
  • Halesite Fire Department's October open house.
  • Three National Merit Semifinalists from Harborfields High School.

But first, today's weather:

Breezy in the morning. High: 70 low: 54.

Here are the top three stories in Huntington today:

  1. Harborfields High School has three National Merit Semifinalists. Less than one percent of all high school students receive the accolade which is awarded to students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Congratulations to Daniel Panettieri, Darien Schultz and Maxmillian Stratton. (Huntington Patch)
  2. A Syosset doctor was elected president of the Medical Society of the State of New York. Dr. Paul Pipia was recently recognized by the town of Oyster Bay. "Dr. Pipia has continually gone above and beyond the call of duty throughout his career to advocate on the behalf of patients and physicians alike," said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. (Patch)
  3. Check out Broadway World's review of "Mystic Pizza" at the John W. Engemen. The play is based off the 1988 Julia Roberts movie and has received rave reviews throughout the island so far. The review said, "this is a delicious show to see as we sadly wind down the summer. You really can't go wrong at this exquisite venue. A brilliant, Broadway-caliber cast, a relatable yet emotional story, and fun music make for a great night of theatre." (Broadway World)

Today in Huntington:

  • Friends of the Poor Walk to Help Struggling Huntingtonians. (9 a.m.)

  • Music in the Garden - St. John's Episcopal Church. (4:30 p.m.)
  • Claudia Oshry: "Not Like Other Girls" Presented by Spritz Society - The Paramount. (7 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  • Rotary Club of Huntington, NY: "We had a truly awesome tour of the Huntington Lighthouse this past Monday. The rain came and went to reveal a magnificent rainbow, followed by a gorgeous sunset over Huntington Harbor. Thank you, Pamela Setchell and the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, for taking us out and showing us around." (Rotary Club of Huntington, NY via Facebook)
  • Huntington Animal Shelter: The shelter really wants Daria to find her permanent home. She has been there for 3 1/2 years and is a great girl. See Daria by clicking the link! (Huntington Animal Shelter via Facebook)
  • Huntington Union Free School District: After a petition signed by about 40 ladies, the Blue Devils girls' golf will organize for spring. The ladies had their first intramural season last spring and this year the Blue Devils will play in Section XI's League I with Half Hollow Hills East, Half Hollow Hills West, West Babylon, West Islip, Deer Park and Bay Shore. (Huntington Union Free School District via Facebook)
  • Helping Hand Rescue Mission: "It's National Diaper Need Awareness Week! Teamwork makes the Dreamwork! Thank you, Allied Foundation, Huntington Assembly and Family Service League! Penny, Heather, Pastor Danny...Kim Gambino." (Helping Hand Rescue Mission via Facebook)
  • Halesite Fire Department: Learn all about fire safety on Oct. 9 at the Fire Prevention Open House. The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon with the theme "Fire Won't Wait, Plan Your Escape." (Halesite Fire Department via Facebook)
