Obesity Can Increase Anyone's Cancer Risk

A recent study said women who sit too much increase their risk of cancer, but obesity can increase both men and women's risk of cancer.

A recent study said women who sit too much increase their risk of cancer, but obesity can increase both men and women’s risk of cancer.

Although the exact link between cancer and obesity is still a bit of mystery, Michael Buchholtz, MD, chief of hematology and oncology at Huntington Hospital, said obesity was the second most common behavioral cause of cancer behind tobacco.

Obesity is linked to an increase in risk of cancer in the following areas, according to the National Cancer Institute:

  • Colon
  • Rectum
  • Esophagus

  • Thyroid
  • Gall bladder
  • Breast
  • Endometrium

“The effect of obesity on a person’s risk of cancer is not limited to just women,” Dr. Buchholtz said. “Both men and women need to be concerned about their weight and how it may increase their likelihood of getting cancer.”
