Recently, our community celebrated the Project Excel opening dinner. This special program, coordinated by Mr. David Perkins, provides job training, mentoring, and academic assistance to our district students. It was so nice to have our Project Excel students, parents, coordinators and administrators together for a wonderful evening. We were treated to some wonderful words from guest speaker Mr. Alonzo G. Jacobs, Esq., as well as student and faculty participants. In his welcome address, student Daniel Reyes, who has been in the Excel program for 3 years, introduced this year’s theme Preparing For Your Opportunities.
Thank you to all of the service providers—Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department Officer Oliver; Mr. Freddie Lifson from Head Start; Dr. Steve Skinner of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., ETA Theta Lambda Chapter; Ms. Linda Leake of TRI-CYA; Ms. Penny Antonio of the Family Service League’s Manor Field Center; Ms. Betty O’Conner of the Family Service League; Mr. Jerrold Erves of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education—and to our presenters, Mr. Jacobs and Mr. Das Elius Velez, Esq.—and to our district mentors. These educators and community advocates do wonderful things for our students. It looks like another great year to come for our Silas Wood Sixth-Grade Center, our Stimson Middle School, and our Walt Whitman High School Project Excel students.
