Proposed Legislation Looks To Solve Huntington Parking Woes
The amendment would no longer allow municipal lots to be used as residential parking for apartments over commercial stores.

A proposed legislation looks to revise the parking code to help meet the parking demands in the Town of Huntington.
The new legislation would require residential apartments located over stores in commercial zones to have on-site parking for the apartments or provide off-site parking within 1,500 feet on a non-residentially zoned parcel. The amendment would also no longer allow municipal lots to be used as residential parking for apartments over commercial stores.
This amendment was introduced by Councilwomen Susan A. Berland and Tracey A. Edwards. Berland says there has been an increased demand for parking with the new residential development of apartment of stores in C-6 zones.

“We can no longer permit the use of municipal lots to calculate spaces for residential use,” Berland said in a press release. “To free up much needed parking spaces, builders must provide the requisite number of parking spots for apartments either on-site or within the required distance.”
“Ultimately, we need a parking garage and we are all working together to come up with the best way to pay for it,” Edwards said. “In the meantime, this amendment will ensure that any new development has the required parking for residential use.”
