Public Hearings Set For Proposed Affordable Housing, Parking Legislations

These legislations will address specific apartments recently constructed in Huntington Village.

Public hearings on proposed legislations that look to revise Huntington Town Code to help solve affordable housing and parking issues in Huntington Village will be held in April.

Both proposals would apply to the entire Town of Huntington, would address specific apartments recently constructed in Huntington Village that are renting beyond rates that young working professionals can afford. The units have also made it more difficult for residents to find a spot in the Huntington Village parkings lots, the legislation says.

The public hearing will be held Tuesday, April 4.

Affordable Housing.

This legislation would require one-fifth of the apartments constructed in the Huntington Village buildings, which are meant for both commercial and residential use, to be designed as affordable. This legislation was sponsored by Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards.

The resolution for affordable housing would require a certain number of units to be set aside as affordable in relation to the market rate ones. Those benefitting from affordable housing would have to file a statement certifying that the unit is still their main residency, the Town says.

Huntington Village Parking

The second legislation would require residential apartments located over stores in commercial zones to have on-site parking for the apartments or provide off-site parking within 1,500 feet on a non-residentially zoned parcel. The amendment would also no longer allow municipal lots to be used as residential parking for apartments over commercial stores. This amendment was introduced by Councilwomen Susan A. Berland.

Berland says there has been an increased demand for parking with the new residential development of apartment of stores in C-6 zones.

The councilwomen are co-sponsoring each other’s resolutions.
