Renovated LIRR Huntington Train Station South Parking Lot Opens
Commuter facility upgrades are also in the works because of $4 million in grant funding.

HUNTINGTON, NY — The renovated LIRR Huntington South Parking Lot reopened on Wednesday, Huntington Supervisor Edmund Smyth announced.
The town also got authorization to complete additional commuter facility upgrades with $4 million in State and Municipal Facilities Program (SAM) Grant funding.
"We are proud to deliver on this long-awaited renovation in the first few months of our administration but the best is yet to come," Smyth stated. "We anticipate moving forward on more commuter infrastructure upgrades at the Huntington train station with recently approved grant funding. Thank you to Jim Ahrens and our Engineering team, our Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino and his team, the Departments of General Services and Transportation and Traffic Safety for all of their work to complete this project on a shoestring budget."

The South Parking Lot renovation project, the final phase of which depended on the weather, resumed the last week of March. Milling and paving was completed over the first week and a half of April. Traffic safety signage was installed, and the lot was striped on Tuesday night.
The Town’s South Parking Lot renovation project added 29 new parking spots. The lot now has 253 spaces. The project also features a new accessible sidewalk on the east side of Fairground Avenue, drainage improvements, lighting improvements, resurfacing with new asphalt paving, two-way traffic flow down each aisle, reconstruction of the southern retaining wall, and the installation of EV conduits for the potential installation of electric vehicle charging stations if funding becomes available to add the infrastructure in the future.

Funding for the South Parking Lot renovation took approximately $431,000 in Townwide Parking Lot repair funds from the Department of General Services, an additional $175,000 in funding approved by the Town Board in February 2021, and $140,000 in additional funding approved by the Town Board in June 2021, according to the town.
In 2018, the town announced $4 million dollars of SAM Grant funding for parking facilities improvements at the Huntington LIRR Train Station. The funds were earmarked for north and south parking lot renovations, elevator replacement in the north parking garage, and structural concrete repairs for the east footbridge to the north parking garage.
The town received the authorization to proceed from the state on the reimbursable improvements on April 5.
