2016 Suffolk County Marathon Runner Profile: Billy Richards

The 2nd annual Suffolk County Marathon will be taking this weekend.
The highly anticipated local event, which will also feature a half-marathon and a 5K race, will take place on Sunday, Oct. 30 starting at 8 a.m. in Patchogue.
Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the veteran services in Suffolk County. Last year the event raised over $160,000.

This year's race is expected to attract thousands of local runners - including Islip resident Billy Richards.
The 34-year-old U.S. Marine veteran traveled to several different states across America to run to different police precincts on his "Thank the Police" tour.

PATCH: Is this your first marathon? If not, how many marathons have you participated in?
BILLY: No, I have done 11 Marathons, 13 ultra marathons, 3 of which were 100 miles.
P: Will you be running alone or with a team?
B: With the Airborne Tri Team.
P: What inspired you to run in this marathon?
B: Running marathons has always been something I've enjoyed doing, this year I run with the American Flag and a 45 pound ruck to raise awareness towards Veterans Suicide.
P: What are most looking forward to in this marathon?
B: Crossing the finish line.
P: What do you think will be most difficult part of this marathon?
B: Running with the 45 pounds of extra weight.
P: How are you training for this marathon?
B: I've been running other long distance events.
P: Who/What are you running this marathon for?
B: I'm running for my fellow veterans, service members, law enforcement and first responders that serve this country and keep it safe
P: What advice would you give to someone who wants to run in a marathon?
B: Never quit, put one foot in front of the other until you cross the finish line.
P: Anything else you would like to add?
B: I am really excited and can't wait to get out there on the 30th.
