ISLIP, NY - After a large amount of protest from the local community, the proposed chicken slaughterhouse will not be coming to Islip.

Last October, Joseph Rosario filed an application for a change of zone to allow for a slaughterhouse on Beaver Dam Road.

The proposal was met with considerable opposition from residents, who claimed that they were concerned the business would decrease property values and bring in rats into the community.

The application remained pending since December but as of Wednesday, the town zoning board officially denied the request.

Members of the board unanimously voted against the proposal, which in addition to the slaughterhouse included a chicken market at the site, due to the fact that the town code doesn’t allow a retail business at that location, Newsday reports.

"The decision cited numerous, well-explained reasons for the denial," Supervisor Angie Carpenter told Newsday. "I applaud the Zoning Board of Appeals for its very careful consideration of the legalities of the application; but, even more, for its common sense awareness of the inappropriate nature of this use at the specified location."
