The Town of Islip Animal Shelter received more than 300 items and $4,000 as a result of the 'Betty White Challenge.'

ISLIP, NY — Animals at the Town of Islip Adopt-a-Pet Center are thanking residents for being a friend.
Since taking up the "Betty White Challenge" earlier this month in honor of animal rights advocate and activist Betty White, the shelter has received 120 packages of assorted cat toys, 50 containers of dog treats, 34 assorted dog toys, 30 bags/tubs of cat litter, 55 collars and harnesses, 10 bags of dry cat food, 6 cases of can cat food, 12 cases of paper towels, 27 bottles of laundry detergent, 10 small dog/cat bowls, and $4,760 in monetary donations, according to a release.
“These donations stand as testament not only to the tremendous reach of Betty White’s extraordinary life, but of the warmth and generosity of the entire Islip community," said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. "For the animals in our Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center waiting for their forever homes, this continued outpouring of support, gifts and donations will not go unnoticed.”

The challenge was held on what would have been White's 100th birthday, and asked fans to donate $5 to animal shelters in her name. White died on December 31, 2021, six days after suffering a stroke, officials said.
Animal shelters across Long Island and throughout the country also raised thousands of dollars in this celebratory campaign.
