Decades-Old Airport Apron Gets $8M Rehabilitation

Long Island MacArthur Airport’s West Terminal Apron is getting a face-lift. Construction began this week to remove and replace 28,000SY of concrete for the first time in 34 years. The project will take approximately four months, and is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2020.

Funding for the project is the result of a $3.3m Airport Capital Improvement Grant administered by the Federal Aviation Administration which requires no local or Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) match, coupled with funding made available earlier this month through Supplemental Discretionary Grand funds from the FY2018 Omnibus Bill H.R. 1645. The total cost of the project is $8.6m.

“We are grateful to our federal elected officials Senators Chuck Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand and to Congressman Peter King, for supporting Long Island MacArthur Airport and for advocating for critical development projects,” said Supervisor Islip Angie Carpenter.

“The West Terminal Apron is a critical part of the airport’s infrastructure and is used to park aircraft near the terminal jet bridge. This project is the second construction project that will occur at the airport in 2020,” said Airport Commissioner of Aviation, Shelley LaRose-Arken.

Design for the West Terminal Apron at Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) was completed in January 2020. Bids for construction were opened on March 5, 2020.
