Inappropriate Image, Language Displayed During Middle School Zoom
The school district stated in a letter that the participant exhibited the inappropriate behavior during a school online session.
ISLIP, NY — A participant during a Zoom session at Islip Middle School last week shared an inappropriate image and profane language, Superintendent Ellen Semel stated in a letter. Semel did not clarify in the letter whether it was a student or someone else who exhibited the inappropriate behavior, only that the situation "involved a student" at the middle school sharing confidential information with "outside parties" on Thursday.
"This event, like all other inappropriate behaviors that occur, is being taken very seriously," Semel wrote.
In response to the event, school officials are actively investigating the offending parties, and anyone responsible will be subject to the Islip schools Code of Conduct and/or applicable laws. According to the letter, students are provided security features, such as meeting links and password-protected credentials, necessary to join class meetings through Microsoft Teams and all security protocols were discussed with teachers during training sessions.

"Due to the nature of this unfortunate situation, we have reviewed best practices regarding Zoom/Teams meeting security with our staff," the letter read. "This will be an ongoing endeavor throughout the year and will be a primary focus in the coming days. The Zoom/Teams virtual spaces are an extension of the classroom, therefore, the Islip Schools Code of Conduct applies to any and all actions within these environments."
The letter stated that any students who exhibit inappropriate behavior will be held accountable accordingly. In addition, after the incident the middle school administration team contacted all of the parents of students in the affected class.
