MacArthur Airport Nominated For USA Today's Best Small Airport

TOWN OF ISLIP, NY - Long Island's MacArthur Airport was recently nominated for the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Small Airport.

MacArthur is among a total of 20 airports selected by a panel to be put up for vote. Now it's up to the voters to select which of the airports make the list. Westchester County Airport in White Plains was the only other New York airport to make the list.

Residents can still cast their votes for the local airport until noon on January 13. Voting is done online through the 10Best website. Winners will be announced January 24.

The voting page describes MacArthur Airport as an alternative for airline passengers "wishing to avoid the big, crowded New York area airports (JFK and LaGuardia)."

• Huntsville International Airport in Huntsville, Alabama
• Indianapolis International Airport in Indianapolis, Indiana
• Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii
• Long Beach Airport in Long Beach, California
• Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in Manchester, New Hampshire
• Paine Field Airport in Everett, Washington
• Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina
• Richmond International Airport in Richmond, Virginia
• Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Savannah, Georgia
• T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island
• Waco Regional Airport in Waco, Texas
• Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita, Kansas

"We are honored to be one of the 20 airports selected by a panel of experts. We are hoping our loyal base of travelers and the Long Island community will vote each day," Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said.

The small airport category includes airports with fewer than 10 million passengers each year. MacArthur Airport serves about 1.6 million customers annually.

"MacArthur Airport is working hard to provide an excellent customer experience," Aviation Commissioner Shelley LaRose-Arken said. "It’s gratifying that the experts participating in the USA Today 10Best Awards recognize MacArthur’s ability to conveniently serve New York travelers."

Following the news of the nomination, the town also announced that MacArthur Airport will receive a $1 million grant as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) 2019 Awards.

The money will go towards improvements and modernization of the airport's main terminal including the baggage claim area, as well as roof and vestibule repairs.
