📰 News we're reading

1. Mayor Cantelmo calls for 'immediate moratorium on all student event and special event permits' for Cornell (14850.com) — City of Ithaca Mayor Robert Cantelmo has ordered an immediate moratorium on all student and special event permits connected to Cornell, citing a reopened investigation into serious sexual assault allegations and failures in university coordination with city police. The freeze, including Greek life gatherings, will stay until Cornell publicly strengthens its protocols for preventing and prosecuting sexual violence.

2. Gas Prices Hold Steady Across Finger Lakes (fingerlakesdailynews.com) — Drivers in Ithaca are now paying an average of $4.44 for regular gas, up a penny from last week and slightly above nearby cities. While prices usually ease in fall, global tensions and high crude costs are keeping Finger Lakes fuel costs near record September levels for both gasoline and diesel.

3. Lurid new details in alleged Cornell gang rape exposed by DA as he battles 'threatening' phone calls (nypost.com) — Cornell and Ithaca residents are watching closely as Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten reopens an investigation into an alleged gang rape at a Cornell fraternity house in Ithaca after a new civil lawsuit surfaced. He released portions of the accuser's 2024 statement to explain why no charges were initially filed, a move former prosecutors call highly unusual and potentially consequential for both criminal and civil cases.

4. Cornell Lightsail Experiment Paves the Way for Interstellar Missions (universetoday.com) — Researchers at Cornell University in Ithaca have successfully tested tiny lightsail spacecraft launched from the International Space Station, proving they can deploy, communicate, and send complete data packets back to Earth. Their CubeSats demonstrated new 3D-printed hardware, novel communications, and spin-stabilization techniques that could one day help enable interstellar missions within a human lifetime.

5. MTA Electric Bus Failures Highlight Flaws in New York's Zero-Emission Mandates (news-usa.today) — Ithaca riders are part of a broader cautionary tale as TCAT's failed electric buses are cited alongside the MTA's struggles to meet New York's zero-emission mandates. A state senator argues these problems show climate deadlines are unrealistic and too costly, especially for local transit and school districts that would have to replace large bus fleets.
