# 82 – Hitting The Links At Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course

A challenging 27 hole golf course is just minutes away.

For those who love to golf for the fresh air and exercise, the camaraderie or the competition, Kings Park is the place to be.

Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course features three 9-hole golf courses that may be played as either 9 or 18 holes. The nine-hole courses include The Red Course, The Blue Course, and The Green Course.

The Red and Green courses were built in 1962, followed by the Blue Course in 1964. All three were designed by well known golf course architect Alfred Tull, whose many other designs include Bethpage State Park and Bonnie Briar Country Club in Larchmont.  Characteristic of Hull designs are difficult bunkers surrounding large greens.

From the white tees, The Red Course measures 2,988 yards and plays to a par of 36, The Blue Course measures 2,921 and plays to a par of 35 and the par 36 Green Course measures 3,091 yards.

Each course presents unique challenges. The Blue Course offers five doglegs, The Green is the flattest and longest while The Red is the hilliest.

Dan Peterson, a Smithown resident, hits the links after work. Golfing at Sunken Meadow “is a great time,” he says. “It’s a great course.”

This public course also offers a putting green, driving range, electric cart and push cart rentals, club rentals, a lounge, snack bar, restaurant and a pro shop.

Lessons and clinics are also available with the club’s head PGA professional, Jonathan Tong, teaching PGA professional Howard Weiss and assistant golf professional Bryan Lemanski.

Although the clubhouse is presently under renovation, all amenities and activities are still available. The club offers a variety of driving range plans which allow for savings, flexibility and convenience.

Weather permitting, the course is open year round. Hours vary seasonally.  Presently, the first tee off is at 5:30 a.m. and the last is 7:00 p.m.
