Traditional Family Stuffing Recipe

This Thanksgiving stuffing recipe will leave your guests wanting more.

When I think Thanksgiving, I think stuffing! Stuffing is such a unique side dish; everyone has their own take on making stuffing. Some people stuff the bird and other people are dead set against it. Most stuffing starts with some kind of bread and can be made with a number of ingredients. I have seen people using other meats, fruits, nuts, oysters and I have even seen a stuffing recipe using fast food burgers!

I grew up loving my mom’s stuffing. She always stuffed the bird and set aside the extra in a baking dish – I love how crispy the top of the stuffing gets when baked separately.

Here is my mom’s delicious stuffing recipe.

1 8 oz package of mushrooms

1 lb frozen chopped spinach

6 tablespoons of butter

1 egg

2 cups chicken broth

1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning

1 teaspoon dried thyme

3/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350

Cut the loaf of bread into cubes (about 1”) and lay them out on a cookie sheet over night to get stale. (If you don’t have time to do this you can bake the cubes in the oven at 200 degrees). Slice the mushrooms and melt the butter in a skillet then sauté the mushroom slices in the butter.  In the meantime cook the spinach until it is warm. Place the cubed bread in a large bowl and mix in poultry seasoning, pepper, thyme, spinach, egg, sautéed mushrooms with all the juices and chicken broth. If the stuffing mixture seems dry add more chicken broth ½ cup at a time.

Place in a baking dish and do not flatten. Cover with foil and cook for 35 minutes and then uncover and cook 10 or more minutes depending on how crispy you want the top.
