Young Children and the Loss of a Pet
The loss of a beloved pet is one of the most difficult things to confront when it needs to be explained to young children.

December 2001: Daughter #1, then 4 Years, 3 Months, and Daughter #2, then 2 Years, 1 Month:
One of the things that I am learning about Parenthood is to listen to my girls while they interact, rather than immediately becoming part of the conversation. I realized that if I put my two cents in, it might stifle their thought process. For example, while driving the girls home from school last night, the following conversation between my daughters occurred regarding our beloved Dalmatian Abbey, who we had to put down at 14 years old.
Daughter #2: "Is Abbey, um..um...um....upstairs?"

Daughter #1: "No silly girl, she's up in Heaven....with God."
Daughter #2: "Oh, yeah...is she sick?"
