An aggressive fire that ripped through an apartment on top of Nan’s Gift and Party Shoppe at 237 Mamaroneck Ave. this morning at 9 a.m. was contained within 20 minutes by VOM firefighters , said VOM Fire Chief Chris Szymanowski. There were no injuries.
As firefighters worked to contain the blaze on the second floor, the overpowering smell of smoke was apparent from a block away. Firefighters accessed the second floor via a truck ladder. Approximately 25 other firefighters clad in heavy gear in the intense humidity watched from the ground.
Five fire trucks were on the scene, including Ladder 19 from the Town of Mamaroneck. Mamaroneck Avenue was closed from Prospect to Palmer Avenue. Yellow police tape blocked the area in front of the stationary store.
A bystander who did not give his name said that, “Flames were coming out of the front window.”
The fire was contained to one room on the second floor, Szymanowski said. There was some smoke and water damage to the store, however, it was unclear the extent.
“A good outcome was had by all,” he said.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the county will be conducting an investigation to find the source of the blaze.
